5b Jane Austen, First edition first impression of the “Peacock Edition” London: George Allen, 1894
Notes
The “Peacock Edition” of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is one of the most celebrated and collectible editions of the novel. Published by George Allen in 1894, this edition emerged during the Victorian revival of Austen’s works, more than 80 years after the book’s original release in 1813. It was illustrated by Hugh Thomson, a renowned Irish artist whose intricate pen-and-ink drawings captured the elegance and charm of Austen’s world. Thomson’s work brought a fresh visual appeal to the novel, complementing its enduring wit and social commentary.
The edition earned its nickname from its iconic gold-embossed cover design, which featured a detailed image of a peacock with its feathers dramatically fanned out. This luxurious and ornate design, also created by Thomson, reflected the Victorian fascination with beauty and craftsmanship in bookmaking. The interior of the book was equally impressive, with wide margins and decorative chapter headings that added to its artistic appeal.
The Peacock Edition played a significant role in cementing Jane Austen’s status as a literary classic. Its release contributed to the growing appreciation of her work during the late 19th century, when her novels were being rediscovered by a new generation of readers. Today, the Peacock Edition is considered a high point in Austen’s publishing history and is a highly sought-after collector’s item, prized for both its literary importance and stunning visual presentation.
Description
Deep turquoise cloth binding with gilt designs and lettering on the front board and spine. Three gold edges with minimal scuffing. Spine is slightly cocked with a tear to the top and wear to top and bottom. Two inch by one inch section on the lower portion of the spine has lost the smooth overlay leaving the blue cloth raised and a portion of the illustration information obstructed. The same exposure of the blue cloth occurs on the back board in smaller sizes and on the front board in several small cuts which do not obstruct the design. Slight warping along the middle right side of the back board. Interior is in excellent condition. Overall, wonderful copy.
